Bunraku

A Bunraku Puppet

I had a chance to see a Bunraku Puppet.
Bunraku is one of Japanese traditional entertainment and it is also a puppet drama. In the seventeenth century (Edo era), it developed in the west of Japan, particularly Osaka.

It was performed by quite a few members and they consist of three parts, for example, a group of Tayu (chanting), a group of Shamisen (playing music and they use a Shamisen), a group of Ningyo (puppeteers).

I saw their performance named "Roben Sugi no Yurai". It means "The origin of the cedar tree of Roben". This story describes Buddhist miracles about temples, Todai-ji (It is located in Nara Pref) and Ishiyama-dera (It is located near Lake Biwa).

I was touched by the performers' delicate actions and the impressive stage. Although it was a traditional way by many people's hands, I thought it was superior to CG in movies.
